Warning Signs

A look in the mirror...or a cautionary tale.

Your very presence at this site suggests you’re concerned about a technology deployment.

Hopefully, you’re still in the planning phase with sufficient time and resources to properly prepare. Maybe you’re in the middle of deployment right now, grabbing the stick with both hands and struggling to keep the project’s nose up. Or maybe you’ve just slogged through the post-mortem and wondered how it all went so wrong.

Do any of the following sound familiar?

  • “Help!” from the Help Desk – Calls are flooding the Help Desk right from the start. The reps soon notice that the new users are clueless, but you think it’s more a matter of time and practice.
  • Goose Chases – Given the horror stories coming in, you’d think the technology had a life of its own. But when you investigate, you find only “misunderstandings.” In other words, no software problems—just user problems.
  • Device Problems? – Screens go dark, data is lost, batteries run down too fast. Some users are panicked; others are fuming. After checking with the manufacturer and the users, it’s obvious the basic operation (settings, data transfer, charging) of the device is not understood.
  • Postponed! – Some district managers ask to postpone the deployment, or eliminate it entirely. This gets your boss’s attention.
  • Rogue Training – A few districts start holding their own training sessions, instead of or in addition to yours.
  • Students Become Teachers – Helpful students assemble and suggest lists of items to be covered in the training. Your trainers assure you they will be covered from now on.
  • Refusal – A district manager tells his people not to use the new technology until the company gets its act together. He can’t afford to waste any more valuable sales time.
  • Measurement – You’re asked to do a survey to see how many people are actually using their new tools.
  • With Your Own Eyes – Whenever you encounter members of the sales force, it seems they never have their device with them. “I really don’t need it that much” is the last thing you want to hear.
